Acrylic paint on stainless steel?

It's for an art piece I'm doing. Will acrylic stay on stainless steel? Or will it peel off? Also, will it rust?Acrylic paint on stainless steel?
If the paint on your art piece is not going to be rubbed or handled much, you could use acrylics if you do not add much water (I'm speaking about the acrylic paints like Liquitex in tubes). If you add even a little water, it will bead and not cover evenly. If the piece of art gets wet or exposed to lots of changes in temperature or constant sun, the paint may curl and peel, too.

Think of how acrylic would behave on a corelle plate or a piece of corning ware. That's the same way it would behave on stainless steel.

A much better choice would be what I call ';airplane paint'; -- it comes in those little bottles that model makers use when they build models cars and airplanes, etc.Acrylic paint on stainless steel?
Acrylic paint will stick to stainless steel. It will only peel, if some one tries to peel it. Any type of paint can get scratched, even car paint. The paint itself will not rust. Stainless steel rarely rusts.

Is your art peice functional? or just for display?

If acrylic does not work for you, I would try car paint, spray paint for metals, professional airbrush paint, and model paint. These paints can handle alot more handling.

Best of Luck!
You can get medium to mix with acrylic to make it adhere to metal at your local hobby lobby, Michaels or other craft store. Folk art also sells a ';metal paint'; Which I used over a year ago to cover up a badly case of paint peeling on a car door mirror and it has not peeled off yet!
Acrylic paint will eventually peel off any smooth, shiny surface. You should sand the surface, blow off the dust, then prime it before painting. That should work.
